So you’ve done your part to help Katrina’s victims. (You have, right?) And, now, as the pictures of devastation keep rolling in, it hits you:
The kind of poverty that kept many people from leaving New Orleans
before floodwaters rose is more a fact of everyday life in this
country — Boston included — than we’d care to admit.
But what can you realistically do about it? Short of feeling guilty
about what you have and spending every free hour volunteering and
putting all the city’s homeless up on your couch, that is. (If only.)
No such drastic measures necessary. You can start by having lunch.
At Pressed Sandwiches — the quick-and-chic little lunch spots downtown
and in Cambridge — that makes helping the city’s needy so darn easy.
And tasty. The menu of creatively stuffed panini includes sopressata
and provolone with cherry pepper relish and grilled portabella
mushrooms and herbed goat cheese with roasted peppers and mesclun. For
dessert, there’s an incredible sliced brioche stuffed with chocolate
and hazelnut spread.
The most delicious — and most important — part: All proceeds after expenses go straight to The Homeless Empowerment Project.
Finally: an efficient, simple, and daily way to help those in need. And it doesn’t require you to give up your life.
Or even your lunch hour.
